Odoo Accounting for Indian Businesses

The Indian localisation is capable. It is also not automatic.

Most Odoo implementations in India go live with the accounting module working and the tax configuration half-finished. The invoices look right on screen. The problem surfaces at the first return filing, when the numbers in Odoo and the numbers on the portal do not agree.

What has to be configured

Odoo's Indian fiscal localisation is a separate set of modules. If the database was created without selecting it, the GST tax groups, HSN fields and return reports are absent, and adding them later to a database with live transactions is considerably harder than doing it first.

The GSTIN drives place-of-supply logic, so a wrong state code produces integrated tax where central and state tax belong — on every document until it is corrected.

Fiscal localisation

Indian chart of accounts, tax groups and the return reports, installed before transactions exist rather than retrofitted.

HSN and SAC codes

Set at product-category level where the catalogue allows, so new items inherit rather than needing to be remembered.

E-invoicing

IRP credentials, sandbox testing before go-live, and the print layout carrying the returned IRN and QR code.

Reverse charge and input tax

Separate accounts for input and output tax, so a mismatch is visible in the ledger without opening the return.

Multi-company and multi-state

A business holding registrations in more than one state files separately for each, and Odoo needs a structure capable of producing them separately. That is a decision taken during setup, not retrofitted once a year of transactions exists.

The same applies to group structures. Inter-company transactions are straightforward in Odoo when configured deliberately and painful when discovered late.

Odoo Accounting — Frequently Asked Questions

Does Odoo handle Indian GST out of the box?+

The Indian fiscal localisation provides the tax groups, HSN and SAC fields and return reports, but it is not automatic. GSTIN, place-of-supply settings, product codes and e-invoicing credentials all need configuring, and the product master usually needs cleaning first.

Can Odoo register e-invoices directly?+

Yes, once credentials are configured it can register invoices with the Invoice Registration Portal and store the returned IRN and signed QR code against the invoice. A separate tool is not required.

What causes an e-invoice to be rejected?+

Almost always data rather than software: an inactive or mistyped buyer GSTIN, a missing HSN code on one line, or a unit of measure the portal does not recognise. The portal returns the reason.

Do we need a separate company per state registration?+

If the business holds registrations in more than one state, each files its own returns, so Odoo needs a structure that can produce them separately — usually a separate company or a properly configured branch.

How long does GST configuration take?+

For a business already on Odoo with a reasonably clean product master, days. The variable is data: a catalogue with missing HSN codes or inconsistent units takes longer to prepare than the configuration takes to apply.

Is this something our accountant can do?+

Most of it is configuration rather than development, so an experienced Odoo functional consultant working alongside your accountant is the usual pairing. Custom development is only needed for unusual document flows.
