Dashboard projects rarely fail on the tool. They fail on data quality and on nobody opening the dashboard. Choose accordingly.
Both tools are capable enough that the choice rarely decides success. What decides it is whether your data is clean enough to trust and whether anyone opens the dashboard after the first fortnight.
Start with what you already own
If your business runs on Microsoft 365, Power BI is the obvious starting point — the licensing frequently overlaps with what you already pay for, and it connects natively to Excel and SharePoint where a great deal of Indian SME data actually lives.
If you run on Zoho, Zoho Analytics is equally obvious. It reads your CRM, Books and Inventory data without an integration project, which removes the most expensive part of most dashboard builds.
Choosing the tool that does not match your stack means paying for connectors and maintaining them. That cost is invisible in the licence comparison and very visible six months later.
Skills you will need in-house
Power BI is more capable and less forgiving. Getting genuine value from it usually needs someone comfortable with data modelling, and its formula language takes real learning.
Zoho Analytics is more approachable for a business user building their own reports. It gives up some analytical depth in exchange, which most SMEs never reach.
Be honest about who will maintain this after the build. A dashboard nobody can modify becomes wrong within a quarter and is then ignored.
The problem neither tool solves
If your source data is inconsistent — the same customer entered three ways, products with no category, dates in mixed formats — both tools will faithfully visualise the mess at speed.
